The Quiet Life

Life Where the Internet Ends

Can you imagine living without cell phones or WiFi and only hearing nature's sounds? Welcome to Green Bank, West Virginia, the only town without cellular service in the U.S. For a small group of folks, this silence is more than just a quirky feature—it’s a lifesaver: no cell towers, no WiFi, just peace.

Green Bank's lack of signal isn't just an accident; it's part of a 13,000-square-mile National Radio Quiet Zone meant to protect its radio telescope. Residents of the town, many of whom suffer from electrosensitivity, find solace in the lack of technology, though it comes with its own challenges - isolation and distance.

Living here isn’t easy, but the sense of community is great. People have built a life together by helping one another and sharing their stories. Green Bank is more than just quiet to them—it is a second chance in life.

Dark Days in Cuba

Waking up to find the entire country in darkness—now that’s something Cuba hasn't prepared for. Millions of Cubans are in the dark after a major power plant failure. It’s one of Cuba's worst blackouts, with officials struggling to fix an already crumbling power grid. Especially during an economic crisis, no one knows when the lights will return.

A woman prepares to catch a tossed frisbee during a massive blackout after a major power plant failed in Havana, Cuba, Friday, Oct. 18, 2024.

Schools and businesses have been closed in an effort to conserve energy, but it's not enough. Following a speech about cutting electricity use, the blackout has left the government scrambling for answers. Yet, with outdated infrastructure and scarce fuel, the road ahead looks bleak. A Cuban resident remarked, “We’re surviving, but just barely.”

Reborn in Code

Imagine your child, taken from you in the most tragic way possible, appeared online... as a chatbot? That's exactly what happened to Drew Crecente when his daughter Jennifer was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2006. Two decades later, Drew received a Google alert letting him know Jennifer's name and photo had been used for an AI chatbot without his permission.

This bot, hosted on Character.ai, portrays Jennifer as a tech journalist offering gaming and pop culture advice. Strangers chat with this digital version of his daughter, unaware of the real, painful story behind her life. Drew's shock and horror were unimaginable. In a way that felt twisted and cruel, AI had brought his daughter back after he'd lost her once.

It was quickly removed after Drew's complaint, but it raises ethical questions about artificial intelligence, privacy, and how technology exploits human weaknesses. Now Drew is out to prevent anyone else from going through what he did—because no family should go through this again.

Bones for Billions

Believe it or not, dinosaur fossils are becoming a hot commodity for the ultra-rich. Earlier this year, a hedge fund manager named Ken Griffin purchased a Stegosaurus skeleton named Apex for $45 million. This is part of a growing trend in which fossils, once owned by museums and researchers, are being bought by private collectors.

Despite these high prices, the scientific community is losing out. Fossils like "Hector," a $12.4 million Deinonychus sold at Christie's, often disappear into private collections, making them unavailable to paleontologists. Private wealth is moving between hands - these sales don't fund research.

Scientists are concerned that fossils are becoming more valuable as assets, locking away valuable pieces of history. Sure, fossils may end up in museums, but we all lose when science competes with million-dollar bids.
